GB3EX has been operational since 1972. The considerable coverage of the repeater extends over most of East and South Devon, northwards along the M5 motorway to the Devon/Somerset border, and eastwards along the coast to Weymouth and Portland.
The repeater’s antennas and coax feeds currently require maintenance, which has reduced its Effective Radiated Power (ERP) and consequently its present coverage. However, work is in progress and return to full ERP is expected by the end of May 2002.
Due to the relocation of GB3WD from Princetown to Plymouth, many users will now find EX useful in providing some of the coverage previously enjoyed through WD. The only other repeater effectively covering the Devon area is GB3TR (VHF), situated in Torbay.
The MINIMUM cost of maintaining GB3EX is in the order of £300 p.a. This can be achieved by several means, but we believe the most effective way is by regular subscription by users. The Repeater Group must also look to building a modest reserve over the next 3 – 5 years to allow for potential mast repairs, or nearby relocation, to safeguard its excellent coverage.
In order to safeguard the repeater’s long term viability, the Group would like to establish a user base of around 20+. We believe this would be sufficient to cover general running costs, which could be supplemented by additional fundraising and donations from other sources. The group already has some generous offers of assistance, subject to sufficient response from potential users.
