EDITORIAL

Disaster has struck my PC - I have had to re-format my main hard drive and it has taken about two days to get set up and going again. This is the reason for the smaller Catswhisker this month. I lost a lot of stories etc. So look out next month! In fact the full 'pdf' version is as usual a credit to it's Editor  and it's contributors - Geoff, G0EVW

Mike G0NEV sends his regards to one and all. He is back on the air and pleased to say hi to you if you should hear him.

The Ted Hall Suitcase Radio story has been met with approval from all those I have had contact with and I am pleased to say I didn’t lose all my work there. You should receive number 2 of 8 with this newsletter, if you haven’t, then please drop me a line and I will send you one.

If you have anything you think will be of interest to others, please let me know and I will be only too pleased to accommodate it in future Catswhisker publications.

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL EVENING - Yes, do try and come along on December 4th at the Chickerell Church Hall. I can’t tell you everything that is planned, but can assure you it will be a most enjoyable evening.

Thanks to everyone that has helped with the Novice training over the past few months, especially Robert G0RYL, Mark M5MKW & Jon G2FHF (formally M0BQQ) not forgetting Bill G3EAT for the wonderful talk he gave on propagation.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone and here's looking forward to a radio active 2002!

Neville, M5NEV

MM2 - 2002

JANUARY'S MEETING 2002

Tuesday the 8th January (Not the 1st)

Did you know that in its forty-year history, there have been some 350 members of the SDRS?

January's club meeting will be devoted to a nostalgia trip, with a display of documents and other relevant material - some of it you may find quite surprising.

What would really make the evening memorable would be the appearance of as many 'old timers' (i.e. ex-members) as possible. There are still quite a lot of those 350 still in the area - and beyond. Present members can do their bit in trying to round up our lost souls and get them to come along - so, if you know any, please spread the tidings. Mentions on the repeaters would be particularly helpful, as often as possible.

There will also be, on sale, a booklet relating the story of the SDRS as told by Catswhisker: this will cost £1, most of the takings going to SDRS funds.

A good turnout will, I am sure, make this a well worthwhile occasion. In the words (?) of the immortal George, G3AVV, cuagn sn 73 de John Rose, M0BQO

MORSE CODE AND NOVICE NEWS

CONGRATULATIONS MERVYN! - Yes, many congratulations to a member of our radio society, SWL Mervyn Bown who has just passed his Morse test at our local Morse test centre in Wyke Regis.

The list of dates for next years tests are now out and the first will be next February, so if you are interested in taking yours, please contact Neville M5NEV and he will only be too pleased to let you have the necessary forms to send off to the RSGB to register.

NOVICE NEWS- Our latest band of budding students are nearing the end of their Novice training course here at Wyke Regis. We have seven attending the course and they are all real radio enthusiasts, even before getting licensed.
The Novice exam takes place on Monday 10th December, so I will be able to report the results in the next Catswhisker. That is of course if news gets back on time from the RSGB!

So, on behalf of all of you, good luck to all those taking their exam in December.
From me and the students, thanks to the instructors and helpers, because without them the courses could not take place.

More news next month, Neville M5NEV

DO YOU GET IT?

It’s always at 8pm on a Monday! If you missed it last week then we could have been talking about you! If you haven’t tried it, then come and listen. I am sure you will want to express your opinion on one of the many subjects that are talked about.

Still not with me? It’s the 2m SDRS net on 145.350MHz - be there, join in!

THE ST BRUNO PROJECT

By Colline Pearless G3PGK

It is not only me that has had his share of problems this last month, Colline has been rushed off his feet and just has not had the time to put together the next part of the project for us, but he assures me that you won’t be disappointed next month. Personally, I think it is because he has done nothing but play with all the new toys he bought from the SDRS November sale!

Thank you Colline for helping out with the auctioneering on the night in question and all those of you that donated items or helped on the night. The SDRS thanks you all for helping to raise in excess of £200:00 towards society funds.
