Your Catswhisker

Sorry it's different from normal, but I have had some big computer problems which are still not resolved.

Although both CMOS and myself know that the hard drive is 6.8 GB capacity, Windows 98 which is newly installed doesn't believe it. I think there is a way of convincing Windows but it isn't mentioned in the manuals.

This means that, believing the disk is full, Windows won't let me install the DTP and Photo programs, amongst others, that I need. The files containing the templates, pictures etc. and a vast amount other information are stored on a separate slave HDD which was loaded from Windows 95, but I can't seem to retrieve them. So, until I am able to install those major programs onto the main HDD that's where they'll have to stay.

Hence, your Catswhisker has been whittled down to bare bones at least temporarily. I hope we will be back to normal before long.                    John, MOBQO

FOR YOUR DIARY

August 13 - Flight Refuelling's Hamfest at Wimborne

This is regarded as one of the best and friendliest rallies in the area. Jim G7JIM will have a car boot table for anything you would like to sell, and will levy a 10% charge in aid of SDRS.

Please note there is no Weymouth Carnival Special Event Station this year.

August 19/20 - International Lighthouses Weekend

Please read the separate piece about it and do your best to support us.

September 5 - 'Tex' Swann, G1TEX of Practical Wireless talks to us.

October 3 - A talk by Robert Micklewright, G3MYM about HF Aerials

This is by request, and Robert, from the Yeovil club, is a knowledgeable and excellent speaker.

November 7 - Rev Alan Rogers on `Fishing in Murky Waters' (a truly Enigmatic title!).

Alan was recently featured in the Dorset Evening Echo, he was one of the code-breakers at Bletchley Park during WW2 so this should be an absorbing evening.

December 5 - A speaker from the Radiocommunications Agency; 'History of the Radio Investigation Service'.

We would like to invite all who have an interest in radio - SWL's, CB'ers etc.

January 2 - The Annual Quiz!; Organised by Robert, G0RYL and XYL Carol.

REMINDERS, REMINDERS!

This one is for more anecdotes, your memories of the early days of SDRS whose 40th birthday falls in 2001. We hope to produce a little booklet to commemorate the occasion but how little (or large) depends on how much detail and how many responses we get. So, please let's have some; don't assume everybody else will because that's the way nothing gets done.

RADIO AMATEURS EXAMINATION Just to remind those who intend to do the Radio Amateurs Examination Course taught by Colin Pearless, G3PGK, and any others who are interested, that it starts in September and the contact if you need one is Neville Bridle at 01305 772806.
INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSES WEEKEND

SDRS and members of the Portland Amateur Radio club are going to participate in the International Lighthouses Weekend on August 19/20. The Special Event Station is to be set up in the shadow of the lighthouse, at the DERA complex close to the Car Park at Portland Bill.

We hope to get as many operators, members and friends as possible but there are cautions we have to agree to, as follows:

1- No alcohol is allowed.

2 - All vehicles are to be parked on the site's roads, not on the grass.

3 - We have to submit names beforehand, of all who might attend. Effectively this will mean submitting the membership lists of SDRS and PARC; if you wish to bring a friend etc. or are a non-member who would like to attend, please let us know.

4 - Catering facilities are available but as the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest barbecues are forbidden. Therefore, there will not be a BBQ. Robert, GORYL is in charge of the operating side; Mark MIEPD is our host on behalf of the MOD.

The most important thing is to ensure that the Station runs for as much of the 48 hours as possible. It needs willing volunteers to set it up and operate. If you can manage, please let Robert GORYL know. He can be contacted by phone on 820400.

Also, bear in mind that as there is no SDRS meeting in August, latest info etc. will have to be communicated by radio (e.g. Monday Net) or telephone.
